TAKE THAT’s surprise comeback is motoring ahead – despite the lads vowing to take an extended break this year.
GARY BARLOW, MARK OWEN, JASON ORANGE and HOWARD DONALD have been making real progress in the studio.
Songwriter Gary has clearly overcome his writers’ block – which was giving him cause for concern at this year’s Ivor Novello awards – and the quartet have been holding fruitful sessions at London’s celebrated Sarm Studios.
A source said: “The lads have been on a roll.
“They had intended to take the rest of the year off but Gary has been firing on all cylinders and has penned a number of new tracks.
“Everyone thought they should strike while the iron’s hot.”
It’s been two years since their album Beautiful World marked the band’s return after a ten-year absence.
GARY BARLOW has given TAKE THAT fans an early Christmas present – and promised the manband will be back in December.
I told you last week that Gary, MARK OWEN, HOWARD DONALD and JASON ORANGE were holding secret talks about a comeback.
And Gaz admitted the news after picking up a gong at the Ivors bash which honours top songwriters.
He revealed: “We will be back by Christmas. We couldn’t stay away.
“I haven’t written the songs yet but we are going to be back. There should be a tour as well.”
Gary was at the awards in London’s plush Grosvenor House Hotel with Howard.
The lads are still looking after themselves even though they’re on a break – and Gaz is clearly still off the muffins.
And he had a mysterious message for me. He said: “You better start getting in shape. I’ve got a challenge for you next year that you’ll have to be fit for.”
I hope Jason’s not out of break dancing action and they need a replacement.
When the tour gets sorted Gary wants 1990s boy band rivals LET LOOSE to support. If you’ve spent the last decade trying to forget them, here’s a reminder.
The trio’s biggest song was No2 Crazy For You and they also had hits with Seventeen and One Night Stand. The band have a MySpace campaign to see if fans want them to reunite.
And one man certainly does.
Gary told me: “Let Loose are due back. They were one of my favourite bands of the ‘90s. They can support us on tour if they want.”
And the TT comeback wasn’t the only surprise of the night — PHIL COLLINS made the audience laugh. He isn’t a man I ever thought would get a giggle for anything other than his acting in Buster.
But the drummer earned a chuckle when accepting his Outstanding Contribution gong.
He said: “I can’t get away without thanking the gorilla. He is far more talented and better looking than me so I am going to offer him the Genesis job.”
Phil is pictured with fellow award-winner MIKA to his right.
Other guests included KATE NASH who missed out on the Best Contemporary Song prize, and MARK RONSON who supported AMY WINEHOUSE, winner of the Best Song gong.
Meanwhile Take That’s former rivals BOYZONE are launching their comeback on Sunday. And the TT lads have some advice to stop the Irish group flopping like EAST 17 and 5IVE.
Gary said: “They have to come out with new material.”
Howard added: “You see so many groups come and go.”
After scooping two Brits in February the lads planned a year out. But they couldn’t stay away and are now working towards a mammoth Christmas tour.
Gary added: “We’re workaholics and missed each other. But we’re together and it’s great.”
Please excuse me. I’m off to break into a rendition of Back For Good.
TAKE THAT are preparing to hit the studio to record a new album — cutting short what was meant to be an extended break after just four months.
After scooping two gongs at the Brit awards in February, GARY BARLOW, MARK OWEN, JASON ORANGE and HOWARD DONALD declared they were going to be out of the game for a while.
But a meeting ten days ago in London has shown they are well up for getting back to work.
A source said: “They’ve had the relevant meetings with their record company about a new album and both parties are in agreement about it.
“They’re going to be back a lot quicker than they’d originally planned.”
The BOYZONE reunion must be on their minds — after all, I bet RONAN KEATING has his eye on Gary’s crown.
Take That’s Beautiful World DVD shifted more than 64,000 copies in a week, making it the fastest-selling music DVD in UK history. So it was more than just a bit of reminiscing for TT fans.
It seems a four-month holiday has been enough to heal the ageing singers’ aches and pains, as they tore up the dancefloor at west London club Kitts on Wednesday night.
The lads made the most of their time off, celebrating hard by downing shots and ordering magnums of champagne and bottles of vodka.
Sounds like it could be a celebration to mark plans for a new album...
Emma B was on Heart who is a big fan of Take That and she had Lulu on the show and they were talking about the new Bond film and who should do the song for it and they both said it should be the lads. Lulu even rang Gary on his mobile but it went to the answerphone but she left a message and said she was at Heart and they think the lads should do it.
